Marcus Willcocks
Research Fellow

Marcus is a 0.6 Research Fellow and Designer with the Design Against Crime Research Centre (DACRC), where he has been involved since it was founded in 1999. He holds a degree in BA (Hons) Product Design (2000) from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London and later completed a Master’s degree in Design and Public Space (2005) from Elisava Escola Superior de Disseny, Barcelona.

His specialisms are linked to enhancing interactions, experiences and activities in built environments and public/social contexts, linked to the application of user and abuser driven design tools and techniques.

His contributions to ongoing design and research projects with DAC (involving some co-management and co-curation of projects and design exhibitions) include A Dialogue with Graffiti, with Southbank Centre London, Elisava Barcelona, Stop Thief Pilot project with Design Council, BTP and commercial collaborators, and Bikeoff (CIVITAS) for Brighton and Hove Council, among others.

Projects he has completed as part of the DACRC design / research teams, include the AHRC-funded ‘Grippa – Turning the Tables on Crime’ project (2006-9) and the AHRC/ EPSRC-funded ‘Bikeoff – Catalysing anti theft bike, bike parking and information design for the 21st Century’ (2006-8), as well as projects funded by the Design Council, Transport for London, Metropolitan Police, BTP and other public and private partners. In 2009-10 Marcus was shortlisted on behalf of the Grippa team for the Research Councils UK business plan competition. Also notable are his contributions to the Stop Thief furniture and Grippa accessories ranges. This work was awarded a top nomination for INDEX 2005 (Denmark), licensed to Dan-Form in 2007 and was selected as part of the SAFE: Design Takes on Risk, exhibition at Museum of Modern Art, New York (2005) and acquired for their permanent collection from 2006.

Marcus also works as a design consultant, recently including UK projects on ageing with Participle, on perceptions in the built environment with Bright Sparks/Urbanlexicons.com (Landscape and Arts Network), and international consultancy that includes delivery of projects with Barcelona, Madrid, Tarragona and Terrassa City Councils, INEFC (regional) and CSD (national) institutes for sport and wellbeing; also lecturing over four years at Elisava and IED design schools, in Barcelona.
