Bikeoff explored how the design of objects and environments related to cycling can reduce the likelihood of theft while promoting cycling, with its many health and environmental benefits. Research included rigorous and extensive observations of cyclists’ locking practices and analysis of ‘perpetrator techniques’ to steal bikes. A key product developed within the project was the M-shaped ‘Camden’ bike stand which was shown to increase secure locking practices by cyclists.

In 2006 DACRL and the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at University College London were awarded further research funding from the AHRC / EPSRC Designing for the 21st Century programme to develop a portfolio of projects. One output was the Bikeoff design resource; a web-based platform and knowledge base of information on bike theft as well as design responses covering bikes locks, parking furniture and facilities, bike hire schemes and materials.
